Saltern by Night

Night has fallen on Saltern Study.

Introducing Saltern by Night, the much-anticipated followup to my original January release of the Saltern Study wallpapers.

Saltern Study

The original daytime version of the Saltern Series is available here.

Saltern Study was a collection of three cubist wallpapers paying homage to the photography of David Burdeny. Initially, I hesitated to release them, fearing I'd be laughed off the internet, but the reception couldn't have been more flattering. People loved them! And in short order, I saw the wallpaper everywhere I looked. And when I saw them make their way into a couple of MKBHD videos, I was floored! One of the most influential tech YouTubers wearing my design?! *faints*

So undertaking a complimentary set to Saltern Study was a formidable undertaking. A crappy sequel to a blockbuster dampens the series, and I wanted to get this right.

Design Process

The series was constructed inside Sketch.

The intention of approaching Saltern by Night was to create a unique and beautiful series in its own right. Initially, I started by creating a new series of designs that I ultimately scrapped in favour of a complementary series to the original three saltern study wallpapers. But it wouldn't be acceptable to take the originals and darken the saturation of each tile; I wanted each wallpaper to be vibrant but also function well as a dark mode wallpaper.

A sample of the different colour palettes used in Saltern Study 03 in contrast with Saltern by Night 03.

The picture above shows a sampling of 20 colours from the exact location used in Saltern Study 03 & Saltern by Night 03. In most cases, the colour has been darkened. Still, there are instances when I opted for a more saturated, brighter, or even an entirely new colour to help give the image the desired coherence while still working hard to make sure that the daytime and nighttime variations felt connected.

I've been working on these images for a few months and am happy to release three new wallpapers to complement the Saltern series. All three are available for the iPad, Mac, and iPhone, with .heic versions also available on the Mac that'll automatically change from day to night depending on whether your Mac is in light or dark mode.

Rather than putting these behind a paywall, I am releasing all three free of charge. But if you have the means, a donation of any kind makes a difference in helping support the work I do. Thanks & enjoy!

Saltern by Night 01

This is the companion to Saltern Study 01, the first wallpaper I created in the Study Series (hence the name). But in this case, it was the third nighttime image I worked on. But we'll stick with the original numbering to avoid any confusion having Study 01 paired with Night 03. And because it was the third night image I worked on, I wanted to play around a bit more and produced this beautiful sunset variation that instantly became my favourite wallpaper of this series.

Saltern by Night 02

I grew up close to the Rocky Mountains, and the image of their steely white peaks chiselled across the dimming sky is one of the most beautiful landscapes I can think of. Saltern by Night 02 is a tribute to that awe-inspiring sight.

Saltern by Night 03

You might remember this one from the iPhone 15 Pro mockups released by Ian & 9to5Mac earlier this spring. Recognition of that calibre was a huge honour. At long last, here is the full-size version for all your devices.
