Feeling like you missed out on proper summer vibes this year due to coronavirus, and it’s now too late to dream of soaking up some beach rays? Apple Music feels your pain, and has some appropriately party playlists to take you back to the 2020 summer vacation that never was. Including one by everyone’s favorite Luther star.

New playlists added to Apple Music include DJ sets from independent dance label Defected Records. One is from recent Glitterbox Virtual Festival and includes the likes of Idris Elba (yes, he DJs as well as acts), Jellybean Benitez, and Boys Noize. The other includes sets from Ibiza in 2019, featuring Roger Sanchez, Gorgon City, Sam Divine.

According to Apple Music, this will be the “start of a regular schedule of new mixes & sets from the label” on its subscription music service. The playlists are available to listen to here.

This isn’t the first time Apple Music has thrown some Ibiza vibes our way. Last summer, it added “unmissable Ibiza playlists” to its offerings, curated by Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza, two of the hottest clubs on the party island. Defected has also created a Chilled Ibiza Classics playlist for the service.

(It’s also not the only time Apple has gotten into the Idris Elba business. This summer Apple signed a first-look deal with Elba. This gives Apple the right of first refusal for all projects created by Elba and his Green Door Pictures production company.)

Why playlists matter for Apple Music

For Apple Music, playlists provide another means of differentiation from rivals. Like the focus on podcasts, it gives streaming music services like Apple Music and Spotify something you can’t get from a competitor. In the early days of Apple Music, it seemingly focused on exclusive albums. Since then, that focus seems to have diminished somewhat. But hand-crafted playlists are certainly a nice feature for subscribers.
