Apple’s upcoming augmented-reality glasses could make additional MacBook screens unnecessary. An AR concept video shows how virtual displays could appear next to real ones, making the user more productive without having to carry around all that hardware.

A concept augmented-reality MacBook
Such a setup would require augmented-reality glasses to project the images of the virtual screens in front of users’ eyes. But there’s considerable evidence that Apple is developing such glasses. A recent patent application might even show what they’ll look like.
They’ll combine computer-generated images with the real world. AR shouldn’t be confused with virtual reality, which completely replaces the real world with a computer-generated version. Apple is supposedly also working on a VR visor as a separate project.
There’s considerable buzz around AR and this isn’t even the first time Hofacker proposed a Mac with virtual displays. A recent AR concept went even further, replacing almost all the computer’s hardware with augmented-reality simulations.
And a triple-screen AR concept Apple Watch too
It’s not just Macs that could benefit from AR. Hofacker also dreamed up a concept Apple Watch with two virtual screens.
In another quick experiment, I prototyped how AR glasses could augment other accessories (in this case Apple Watch).
