The iPhone 12 looks like a monster hit for Apple, a new note to investors by research analysis firm Cowen suggests. The firm estimates that iPhone orders climbed 50% year-over-year last quarter, propelled by the enormously popular iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models.

For the March 2021 quarter, Cowen thinks Apple will build 57 million iPhones. That’s up from the firm’s own previous prediction of 55 million.

While Cowen predicts the iPhone 12 will take a dip in the June quarter, it does not expect the pullback to be the same as in 2020. Instead, the forecast is for 44 million iPhones during the quarter. That’s an increase of 26% year-over-year.

Cowen thinks Apple will produce 101 million iPhones in the first half of 2021. That would significantly outpace market expectations of 90 million units.

If these figures prove accurate, they would be pretty spectacular. At the rate Apple’s currently going, the company could enjoy its best year ever for iPhone sales. You’d have to go back to 2014 and the iPhone 6 series to be in the same ballpark. Given how much more saturated the smartphone market is today — even more than it was in 2014 — that would be a massive achievement for Apple. Especially during an economy-shaking global pandemic.
