What you need to know

  • Discord is making changes to NSFW server designations.
  • It is going to block NSFW servers for all users, even those who are over 18, on iOS.

Discord has announced changes to its community guidelines that will see all NSFW servers blocked on iOS.

In a support post Monday Discord stated:

Our Community Guidelines require that all adult content posted to Discord be kept behind an NSFW gate. Server owners can designate specific channels as being 18+ by adding an NSFW gate. Entire communities can now be classified as 18+ through the use of an NSFW server designation. No users between the ages of 13 and 17 will be able to join or view the content in NSFW servers.

Discord says server owners must apply NSFW gates to channels with mature content on them, which will have a big impact on iOS users:

Additionally, all users on the iOS platform (including those aged 18+) will be blocked from joining and accessing NSFW servers. iOS users aged 18+ will still be able to join and access NSFW communities on the desktop and web versions of Discord.

As The Verge notes, it may well be Discord has made the iOS-specific change to keep Apple happy regarding its App Store guidelines.

A few disgruntled Discord users have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment in the change, with some even saying they might switch to Android as a result.
