The Society for Information Display on Tuesday named Apple’s Pro Display XDR one of its 2020 Displays of the Year, among the industry’s highest honors.
This top-tier display debuted in December alongside the latest Mac Pro. It sports a 32-inch Retina 6K screen, with 10-bit color and a super-wide viewing angle.
The Displays of the Year award is “conferred upon display products with the most significant technological advances and/or outstanding features,” said a statement from the Society for Information Display.
The Apple Pro Display XDR is being lauded for offering high-dynamic-range performance in a traditional LCD. All recipients of 26th annual SID awards were chosen by a distinguished panel of experts for advancing the state of the art in display technology. The panel evaluated the nominees based on degree of technical innovation and commercial significance.
Another winner of SID’s 2020 Displays of the Year award is the flexible screen used in the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Apple’s Pro Display XDR features P3 wide color and 10-bit color depth. It offers 1000 nits of full-screen sustained brightness and 1600 nits peak, as well as a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
The screen is for photographers, video editors, 3D animators and colorists. It’s a professional-grade device, with a price to match: it starts at $4,999. Still, that is significantly less than traditional reference monitors, which can run $25,000 and up.
This isn’t the first time the SIC has commended an Apple display. The iPad Pro was named one of 2018’s Displays of the Year, and the iPhone X won an award that year too.
