Maybe you’ve been thinking that MacBooks are just too practical. What you want is a handheld Mac with a screen you can barely see and an uncomfortable keyboard. Well, T. Sanglay, Jr. has just the project for you. He created miniature hackintosh that runs macOS Big Sur.
And he filmed a video to show the computer coming together. Watch it if you have a hard time believing someone could assemble a Mac about the size of paperback novel.
Call it the hackintosh mini
The computer is built around an LattePanda Alpha with an Intel Core M3 processor and 8GB of RAM. Sanglay pre-installed macOS Big Sur on a WesternDigital 240GB SSD with the help of Dortania.
He had to 3D print a custom case for the internal hardware, battery, HDMI port, a trio of USB-A ports and Ethernet. He added a 5.5-inch touchscreen and a mini keyboard.
Sanglay is the first to admit that a Mac with a tiny screen and keyboard isn’t very useful. “I just wanted to make one for myself,” he said. And while he plans to use the hackintosh as a desktop, he understands that still doesn’t make this a practical project because he could have bought an M1 Mac mini for less money. “But where’s the fun in that?“ Sanglay asks.
And he’s hardly alone in his desire to make a tiny Mac. Last year, a DIYer built the world’s smallest iMac.
