Apple nipped a 8-episode biography of Hedy Lamarr away from Showtime. The drama will star Gal Gadot as the 20th-century actress who was also an inventor who helped lay the groundwork for some of today’s wireless technologies.

The show will appear on Apple TV+, the company’s streaming video service that’s taking on the likes of Netflix and Disney+.

News broke last August that the star of Wonder Woman would take the lead in a biopic on Hedy Lamarr being produced for Showtime. But now it’s Apple giving a straight-to-series order to the show, according to Hollywood Reporter and others.

Hedy Lamarr on Apple TV+ will explore a beautiful and brilliant woman

The series, called simply Hedy Lamarr, will reportedly explore the life of a woman who emigrated to the United States from Austria in the late 1930s. Louis B. Mayer, head of MGM, made her a star. She went on to appear in 30 movies.

More than just a pretty face, Lamarr and composer George Antheil worked out a way to prevent interference to radio-controlled torpedoes by frequency hopping. The technology went on to become part of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

The idea for Hedy Lamarr came from Gadot. It’s being written by Sarah Treem, best known as the co-creator of The Affair for Showtime.

When the drama will join the other shows on Apple TV+ is not yet known.
