Apple’s next iPad Pro could be one of the most exciting iPad refreshes in ages — with 5G cellular, an A14X processor and a mini-LED display, according to increasingly reliable Apple tipsters L0vetodream and @choco-bit. (Yes, despite the odd Twitter handles, both have impressive reputations when it comes to sharing details of next-gen Apple products.)

L0vetodream says that the next-gen iPad Pro will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 modem, boasting support for both mmWave and sub-6GHz. This would provide an optimal 5G experience for large numbers of people. L0vetodream claims the new iPad Pro will ship in Q1 or Q2 of next year.

@choco-bit claims that the new iPads will come in two sizes, in keeping with previous years. These are supposedly code-named J517 (small) and J522 (large). There’s no specific reference given for sizes.

The presence of mini-LED has been heavily rumored for future iPads. A March report from TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that mini-LED displays will be exclusive to a 12.9-inch iPad model initially. A previous report from L0vetodream said the tech could also be on its way to the iPad Air.

Mini-LED offers a few significant advantages over OLED displays. It would make it possible to create thinner, lighter designs. This could be done while retaining the color accuracy, high contrast and dynamic range, and efficiency of OLED.

It remains to be seen how quickly Apple will bring 5G to cellular versions of the iPad. The last time Apple made a leap forward like this was with the first 4G iPhone (2012’s iPhone 5). That same year, Apple introduced the iPad 3, which also offered 4G support. If Apple follows that trajectory (and why wouldn’t it?), the idea of a 5G iPad soon after the 5G iPhone 12 makes a lot of sense.
