Apple’s new iOS 15.4 beta eliminates a bug that prevents third-party apps from using iPhone 13 Pro’s super-smooth ProMotion feature.

Until now, apps not made by Apple have been restricted to a 60Hz refresh rate on the company’s newest flagship smartphone. But after installing iOS 15.4, they’re just as silky as apps running on iPad Pro.

iPhone 13 Pro apps hit 120Hz

Its ProMotion display is one of the biggest selling points of iPhone 13 Pro. It may not sound like a big deal if you’ve never used a 120Hz display, but once you’re accustomed to it, 60Hz screens just don’t feel the same anymore.

However, when iPhone 13 Pro made its debut last fall, it looked like Apple was preventing third-party apps from taking advantage of its screen upgrade. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case; it was just a bug that needed squashing.

iOS 15.4 finally addresses the problem. Under the new beta, which also allows you to use Face ID while wearing a mask and adds more than 30 new emoji, third-party apps can reach 120Hz refresh rates as intended.

“Yay, got a little message from someone at Apple today that this is fixed in the iOS 15.4 betas and all apps automatically get 120 Hz animations on supported iPhones going forward,” tweeted Apollo developer Christian Selig.

iOS 15.4 on the way

Another subtle change in iOS 15.4 is the addition of a new Wallet widget. It comes ahead of a rumored Home screen overhaul in iOS 16, which could make widgets interactive — like those on Android — for the first time.

The first iOS 15.4 beta is available now to registered developers. Assuming no major issues arise, it should make its official public debut in the coming weeks.
